Introductions
After self-introductions, Bob Introduced Jana as new Co-Coordinator of the Coalition

  • Jana previously served as a professional Coalition Coordinator for Drug Prevention Resources (DPR’s CEO, Becky Vance, has been directly involved with CCSAC in past years)

  • Working with DPR, Jana started Impact Garland, the coalition for Garland, Rowlett and Sachse

  • Jana has received training in coalition building using a system called The Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST)

Goals of Changes in Structure

  • More defined decision-making process

  • Encourage greater participation by

    • More cities/communities

    • More sectors of the population

  • Means of raising and managing funds

  • Create broader credibility within Collin County for

    • Fundraising

    • Support for initiatives

    • Accountability for money management

  • Co-Coordinators (at least for remainder of 2016-2017 Project Year)

  • Executive Board - Currently intended to represent

    • Larger population areas

    • Key Community Sectors

  • Current Executive Board Members include

    • Jennifer Atencio

    • Malini Ghoshal

  • Member Agreement

  • Manageable Initial Program Goals

  • Explore possible Non-Profit Corp Status

Member Agreement and Sector Representation

  1. Discussed the importance of having representations from the 12 sectors.       - Bring all issues to the table-not everyone is dealing with the same problem.

  2. Member agreements holds each member accountable for participating in   some manner and not putting all of the pressure on one group of members causing burnout.

Goals - Remainder of Project Year 2016 - 2017

  1. Collaboration of County-wide Drug Prevention Public Service Announcements

  2. School Counselor Meeting for Spring Semester

  3. Coordinate Drug Take-back Event to Coincide with DEA Event Spring, 2017

  4. Improvements to Digital Presence: Website, Facebook, etc

Jana presented:

Work Groups

  1. Work groups are important to be most effective in the community.

  2. Discussed the following work groups:

    1. Law Enforcement/Environmental strategies

      1. Environmental strategies incorporate prevention efforts aimed at changing or influencing community conditions, standards, structures, systems and policies - ex. RX Drop box throughout the community, fines for underage drinking, social hosting ordinance, etc.

      2. These environmental strategies require working with law enforcement. Collaborating together to make a difference.

      3. Planning RX take backs and placing of RX drop boxes

    2. Data

      1. Researching, working with the community (hospitals, law enforcement, The Council on alcohol and drug abuse).  This data will help the coalition to see the greater need, ways we can collaborate, implement and make a difference.

    3. Prevention/Education

      1. Planning forums, youth rallies, dinner and dialogue, community outreach events, presentations in classrooms.

      2. How can the coalition be most effective in their prevention efforts.
